“One Life Touches Another,” an event held to raise funds for the Have Faith Haiti Mission, a charity founded by Mitch, took place June 19, 2012 at the Somerset Collection in Troy, Michigan. A crowd of nearly 300 gathered to hear Mitch tell the story of how he was drawn to Haiti following the devastating earthquake there in 2010 and how he eventually became caretaker and operator of an orphanage in Port-au-Prince that houses and educates dozens of children. Audience members were treated not only to Mitch’s stories, but also to the stories of a young woman who had grown up at the Mission since age 4 and who is now a second grade teacher – as well as that of Florence Moffett, a missionary who spent 28 years at the orphanage before Mitch arrived.
The evening, sponsored by both Somerset Collection and Cooper Standard, also honored Nate Forbes and the Forbes Company for their philanthropic and humanitarian efforts, many of which have touched the Mission. Guests enjoyed a 20-minute film by Jesse Nesser that showed the enormous physical transformation of the Mission over the past two years (new dorms, kitchen, bathroom, and school), thanks to the efforts of the “Detroit Muscle Crew” (all volunteer workers) and generous donations from the public. The film – and Mitch’s speech – brought attendees to their feet.
