OUR READERS HELP S.A.Y. DETROIT SALVAGE LIVES

Our Readers Help S.a.y. Detroit Salvage Lives

Last year, it was nothing more than a dusty storage area. Old pipes. Dirty walls. Dim lighting. Boxes piled high. It was the southeastern corner of a homeless shelter building operated by the Michigan Veterans Foundation.

Through these doors come 160 veterans a day, men who have served this country, worn the uniform, in some cases taken bullets or shrapnel, and who are now, for whatever reason, homeless.

"We could really use a kitchen," the executive director, Tobi Geibig, told me back then.

"Where would you put it?" I asked.

The Dream Fund

The Dream Fund

Mitch Albom started the Dream Fund at the College for Creative Studies in 1992 to provide funding for under-served children to participate in the arts and to instill confidence in our youth.  Since that time, CCS has utilized the Dream Fund to support visual, performing, summer “Week at a Time” youth scholarships, community art programs, and even the Detroit 300 project in 2001.

A Hole in the Roof Foundation

A Hole in the Roof Foundation

The mission of A Hole in the Roof Foundation is to help faith groups of every denomination who care for the homeless to repair the spaces in which they carry out their work and offer their services.  The seed that gave root to the Foundation – and also inspired its name – is the I Am My Brother's Keeper church in Detroit, MI.  Here, despite a gaping hole in the roof, and no matter how harsh the weather, the pastor tends to his community to provide spiritual nourishment and a sanctuary for the homeless.

Services are FREE OF CHARGE to all children and adult women who are uninsured or under-insured.  The Clinic provides a wide range of free maintenance and preventive health services.  On-site diagnostic equipment assists the medical professionals in addressing a variety of health conditions, and health education is provided on site for individual clients and small groups. It was made possible largely through the generosity and hard work of Cooper Standard Automotive and its CEO, Jim McElya.
