19 Jun 2015: Working Homes, Families Builds a Neighborhood

DETROIT — In a matter of weeks, Jesse White Sr. will be moving his family from their one-bedroom apartment into a three-bedroom house with a backyard and trees that are as old as its east side Detroit neighborhood.

“This isn’t just a house, it’s a home,” said Chanel Roland-White, Jesse’s wife, who’s pregnant with the couple’s fourth child.

Thursday was a special day for Detroit – and a groundbreaking one at that.

The White family became the first of six to be awarded a home with Working Homes/Working Families, one of the nonprofits under Mitch Albom’s S.A.Y. Detroit’s umbrella of charities.

The house giveaway was the highlight of the first of a three-day collaborative effort involving S.AY. Detroit and the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, which teamed up with Cooper Standard Foundation and DOW Elastomers for an intensive rebuild of six homes in an east side neighborhood near Courville and Mack. 19 Jun 2015: First D.R.Y. Library Opens in the Philippines

A children’s library opened Friday in the central Philippines. But it symbolizes so much more than that.

In November 2013, a super typhoon flattened areas of the country, killing more than 6,000 people and displacing thousands more. When author Mitch Albom visited the island nation three months later, touring schools where he saw tents and plywood serving as makeshift walls, he pledged to build 10 libraries in one of the hardest hit regions ravaged by the storm and stock them with books.

18 Jun 2015: 'Walk With Me' Docu Premiere Raises Funds for SAY Detroit

More than 1,500 people attended a world premiere event celebrating the life of civil rights icon Judge Damon J. Keith on Wednesday night at the Max Fisher Music Center in Detroit.

The soon-to-be 93-year-old Keith, a prominent federal judge, was the subject of a documentary called "Walk with Me: The Trials of Damon J. Keith'' directed by filmmaker Jesse Nesser.

The closed Lipke Recreation Center will reopen as the S.A.Y. (Sports, Academics, Youth) Detroit Play Center after repairs and refurbishment. In partnership with SAY Detroit a 501(c) (3) non-profit, the city of Detroit, and Score7 Charitable Fund, the center will engage underserved youth in a unique approach to motivational learning.
